The Sullivan United Summer Employment Program is being put in place to help college-aged job seekers in Sullivan find summer employment opportunities in the county. The program is being organized by the Sullivan County Partnership for Economic Development, the Sullivan County Chamber of Commerce, and the Sullivan County Visitors Association.
“Our aim is to give our college students meaningful employment and learning opportunities for the summer,” says Partnership President and CEO Marc Baez. “All the better, if we can match students’ courses of study with these opportunities; we’re working with great local businesses to do just that.”
The program is a response to the Sullivan County notion that the area’s youngest and brightest citizens continue to leave the area after graduation, due to its lack of quality employment opportunities. With the county’s anticipated economic resurgence picking up steam with each passing month, the goal of The Sullivan United Summer Employment Program is to show students that there is a path of opportunity right here in Sullivan County.
“Employers benefit by laying the groundwork for the county to grow,” says program organizer Jack Drapkin. “By providing opportunities to locally-based students, our businesses give them the chance to progress, to use their talents and skills to benefit the greater local business community.”
In only its first week, the program yielded three placements, with many more in the vetting process. Local businesses like Watermark Communications and Granite Associates, L.P. have joined the program, and positions have already been made available in fields including engineering, accounting, communications, and more.
The Sullivan United Summer Employment Program will be accepting applications from local businesses interested in taking part as employers, as well as student resumes through the first week of July. There is a requisite $50 recruitment fee with each employer application. Applications and resumes will be reviewed as they are received; decisions on best employment matches will be ongoing and employers will be notified when a qualified candidate has been identified.
