The Town of Lumberland was established in 1868 when large bluestone quarries opened near Pond Eddy. Stone from these quarries left town via the D & H Canal on the New York side of the Delaware River and the Erie Railroad on the Pennsylvania side, destined to become the curbs and sidewalks of New York City.
Lumberland currently consists of several hamlets: Pond Eddy, Glen Spey, Mohican Lake, Black Forest, and Hillside. There are several children's camps in the area as well as State-owned areas dedicated to the preservation of the Bald Eagle.
Several canoe venues are situated along the Delaware River for rafting, canoeing, fishing, hiking, and biking. Lumberland offers an eclectic array of activities including country auctions, church suppers, pancake breakfasts, and barbeques. Lumberland’s active Renaissance group, a dedicated team of "grass roots" volunteers, worked together to bind their best resources of citizenry, civic, school, and business groups. This led to their award-winning Circle Park, which stands as a central point of activity and beauty within the Town.
