Eighteen crystal clear lakes, numerous trout streams and ten miles of the scenic Delaware River are only the beginning of Highland's spellbinding beauty and attraction. The town's name notes its location on elevated ground north of the Delaware River.
The township is known for its rich history including the Minisink Battleground County Park, site of a battle in the Revolutionary War, and the world's first suspension bridge, the Roebling Bridge. Bald Eagles can be found making Highland their winter home. Spring, summer and fall find Highland alive with campgrounds, canoe and rafting ventures, hiking and biking. The North American Cultural Laboratory (NACL) has made Highland its summer theater home.
Barryville, one of the quaint villages within Highland, is situated on the historic Delaware River. In its prime, the Upper Delaware River area was a mecca for retreating from city life. John F. Kennedy, Bette Davis, Charles Lindburgh, and Paul Newman are but a few of the celebrities who have been to our area.
Today, the area is experiencing a proud and swift resurgence of popularity. The intrigue of yesteryear is back! Great places to visit include Tre Alberi Restaurant, the newly-renovated River Market (which was purchased by a small group of transplanted New Yorkers a few years ago and thoroughly restored and rebuilt to house a number of unique shops offering such sundry items as antiques, fine coffees, art, and pet supplies), Spring House Commons and the eclectic Barryville Emporium. Wonderful antique shops, grocery stores and restaurants are open all-year to serve the needs of residents.
The Town of Highland consists of the following Villages and/or Hamlets: Minisink Ford, Barryville, Eldred,Yulan, Highland Lake.
