The Town of Forestburgh is one of the smallest of the fifteen towns of Sullivan County. Once the home of author Stephen Crane where he spent many days, writing much of his prose as the climate agreed with his delicate health.
Another noteworthy place is the town is Merriewold Park, famous for residences of play writers, and stage and screen actors and actresses. Sho Fu Den, the Japanese palace brought here from the 1939 New York’s World Fair by Dr. Takamine, chemist and inventor is also a Forestburgh attraction. There are fifteen historical markers throughout the town denoting its rich history.
Currently, many second home owners have made Forestburgh their seasonal and weekend dwelling. There are also designated wildlife preserves for the bald eagle, (along the Mongaup River on County Road 43 near Lumberland and other locations).
A nine mile Swinging Bridge (bridge long abandoned) exists within the Forestburgh and Thompson townships. Popular for architecturally pleasing homes, boating, swimming and fishing. Forestburgh’s character is enhanced by its people, who with varying cultural interests, insight, vision, and caring make Forestburgh an ideal setting in which to live and work.
